Case Study: All the Media
This case study outlines a feature found in the Attender app.
Thinking all the way back to those initial discovery interviews I had conducted my first month on the team, one of the features attenders wanted out of an app was the ability to watch and listen to LC content throughout the week.
Attenders want to access, queue, download all types of media available to watch and/or listen on their devices.
Increase adoption of the Attender app and increase media downloads, sharing, and streaming.
Timeline 4 Months
Tools Sketch, InVision, Principle
In addition to the sermon that is broadcast live online there are an army of writers, filmmakers, actors, animators, and musicians producing supplemental content to be released at all 27 Life.Church locations each weekend. This content comes in the form of short stories, films, animated shorts, kids shows, study group videos, podcasts, and music.
→ Hundreds of hours of audio and video not playable, shareable or discoverable online*
→ None of the content was managed within a system, no tags, no cross-referencing, no search, no closed captioning
→ No delivery mechanism to deliver the content to multiple properties
→ No ability to sync what you watched on the web with what you watched on the app and vice versa
*exceptions were clips shared on LC social media.

Exploring Media Distribution
(In 2016) We knew that more than 80% of LC attenders carry a smartphone and of those ~65% had the LC Attender app installed on their mobile devices.
A small team of us spent our Ship It Week working through the big question of: How could we wrangle all of this content and deliver it to multiple properties online?
We spent the week exploring:
→ a media section for the website and mobile apps
→ content management solutions
→ video encoding processes
→ APIs to deliver all of the content to those properties
What We Accomplished:
→ We launched a new media experience on the LC website
→ We launched a content management system and APIs to manage and deliver all the media
→ We kicked off design of new media experiences for iOS and Android
→ We were able to improve the transcoding of content 100x from post-production to delivery
→ All of this resulted in over 100 hours of additional content added to all LC digital properties
In the two months that followed:
→ We expanded on the initial ideas explored during Ship It Week and further developed our media delivery capabilities.
→ We launched new media experiences for iOS and Android as well as Apple TV and Android TV apps.
→ The media section surpassed 2 Million media plays across all platforms and the app acquired nearly 8,000 new users.
